Application Programming Interface (API)

A format used as an interface by software components to communicate with each other.

Hosted Payment Form

Allows merchants to accept and process credit cards online through a web form on a secure server.

Payment Acquirer/Processor

A company (often a third party) appointed by a merchant to handle credit card transactions for merchant acquiring banks.

Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS)

A standard of rules that companies who store or process cardholder information and credit card data must follow.

Payment Gateway

A service that authorises payments for e-businesses, online retailers and brick-and-mortar shops.

Shopping Cart

An internet or software company that provides e-commerce tools and payment form solutions for merchant websites.

Software Development Kit

A set of software development tools that allows for the creation of applications for a certain software package or operating system.

Tokenization

The replacement of cardholder data with an electronic file that corresponds with the original card data stored in a secure, third-party database away from the merchant’s environment.

Virtual terminal: (Card-Not-Present)

Keyed credit or debit transactions that are processed from e-mail, phone or internet sales.
